Are novelty car horns, such as a cow sound, road legal?

They may be road legal, but unfortunately they have the side effect of making you look like an immature imbecile if you have them fitted!

Are novelty car horns, such as a cow sound, road legal?
They%26#039;re not legal as the main warning device on a vehicle but UK suppliers of multitone horns put the following caveat in their adverts %26quot;NOT ROAD LEGAL...But if you keep your normal horn and operate this one through a switch you will have the best of both worlds... ......
Reply:no, they are meant for show cars only
Reply:For a vehicle first used on or after 1 August 1973, a sound emitted by the horn must be, and I quote:

. a constant note.

. continuous or uniform.

. not harsh or grating.

Quite what the last condition really means I don%26#039;t know, but I presume it refers to a klaxon.

PS This refers to the UK.
Reply:Some places no and some yes.

Remember this site is read and used by people all the way around the planet.

Here people have all kinds of weird horns and other devices and no one cares.
Reply:not illegal to have them fitted, but illegal to use work that one out
Reply:I think it would be cool to have one of those. Check with the state vehicle department and ask them what the mininum decibel%26#039;s required are. If the horn meets those then it is legal.
Reply:only if fitted to a vehicle registered prior to 1978
Reply:Not here in the uk but you can still fit one with it%26#039;s own switch, just don%26#039;t get caught using it!

They were popular in the 60%26#039;s!
Reply:My wife has an air horn for crying outloud. And sure the horns like the dukes of hazard and farm animals to the best of my personal knowledge, are NOT illeagal, however you do have to have the manufacturers horn which has to be so many decibles da da da. But go ahead turn some heads. Have fun Good Luck!
Reply:you can sound one if you wish but it wont pass an MOT unless it has the standard horn aswell.

Why you%26#039;d want a cow sound is obviously something you need to see your doctor about.
Reply:No except on vehicles registered before 1972. In any case they make you sound very uncool
Reply:Nope
Reply:CALL YOUR LOCAL DMV OFFICE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.
Reply:Novelty horns were the rage a few years back when custom cars were around. A driver may fit one of these, colonel bogey, trumpet volentry, cow moo, etc. BUT they must be wired to a seperate switch NOT directly to the stearing wheel horn. The point is that its a road warning and people would not automaticaly take notice of a musical horn.
