Pygmy goat horns chipping away?

Our two pygmy goats are about 6 months old. Both female, and both have horns. Only one of them are having this problem. Her natural horns are a lighter ivory color, which is breaking away and showing a black/gray spotted horn underneath. Is this normal?

It%26#039;s normal for the horn to chip away. As long as what%26#039;s under the origonal horn is hard and not fleshy it will be fine. It may be the fact that your goat isn%26#039;t getting enough of something in her diet. Talk to the vet. He (or her) might be able to help you with getting her a new grain or hay. I have two does too. They both have horns. They aren%26#039;t pygmys one is a toggenburg and one is a mix. The mixes horns chip. I don%26#039;t pick at them and i just let them be. They are ok. If your goat starts atcing like it hurts her when you touch the new growth under the old call a vet.
Reply:I have many different breeds of goats, but no pygmies with horns.

Every once and a while they get themselves stuck in the fence, because you know they have to try and fit their head through a space to tiny to get back out of. Everytime one girl did this her horns would chip ever so slightly. She is young and I have noticed, only my young girls do this on average. I think it has something to do with them growing and everything.

As long as they are strong and there is no bleeding or anything, they should be fine. It may have something to do with stress because these girls (her twin did it also) were shipped to me a few weeks earlier. So maybe the stress of the move and a new diet (and of course the head getting stuck) just made the horns a little flakey. The new horns below the breaking parts are coming in really nicely. Solid, so maybe that%26#039;s it.

Hope it helped.
