Why do people think that the Viking helmets had horns when they actually didn't?

It%26#039;s for an extra credit thing I need for History, and can%26#039;t find it anywhere.

Hehe... sorry if it bothers anyone. =]

Why do people think that the Viking helmets had horns when they actually didn%26#039;t?
Come on now, we all should know that the helmets did not have the horns, the Vikings themselves had the horns and the helmets had custom cutout areas for the horns to pass thru.

Didn%26#039;t you see history of the world?
Reply:I would imagine the reason for this false interpretation would be that the Vikings were actually perceived for some time as the hunters of human beings. They essentially lived off their slaughter of anyone non-Viking. When their supplies were depleted they would go to another country killing all the males of a certain age stealing all they could so they could survive yet another winter.

Also, the phallic symbol of the horns was one of power. And the Vikings were an amazing force to recon with.

That is how life is, we allow our perceptions to fog the facts with opinion. Life is truly like the telephone game, the story never stays the same.
Reply:Well since it is not historical that viking had horn on their helmets... Why would you expect to find some historical note stating that fact.... It was some screen writer that thought vikings would look more scary with horns on they helmets so in almost every movie with viking in it.....They had helmets with horns and history suffers from that non-existing traditions....................
Reply:I thought they did!!!

Actually, I remember going to %26quot;Vikingarr%26quot; when i was younger and not seeing any horns.

I dont know why, i think its just what the media and films have portrayed to us for so long that we have all came used to the idea that they do.

Even after visiting vikingarr i still thought hey had horns when i started to answer this, until i thought about the place and remembered they didnt :P
Reply:It%26#039;s just folklor ( false history) to make people think that they were great worriors and fighters which they really were if you look back in history.Adolf Hitler thought the master race came from Vikings and used it as a tool to try and take over Europe.
Reply:Hagar the Horrible is largely to blame.

The problem with a horned helmet: the horn is just a handle for your opponent to take it off and wack your unprotected (though likely thick) skull.
Reply:the horn is on the leaders helmets so the troops would know who they were following , like war bonnet with the most feathers told the tribe who was chief

Reply:I AM a viking and the helmets did have horns. they were used for kinky purposes. tell your teacher that!
