What time of year will deer/moose drop their horns ?

Do any other North American animals shead antlers, ie. elk, caribou ?

What time of year will deer/moose drop their horns ?
The word %26#039;deer%26#039; refers to any member of the family Cervidae, which includes elk, caribou, moose, white-tailed deer, mule deer, etc. These animals have antlers, not horns - horns are unbranched, permanent structures which are never shed. Antlers are branched and are shed and regrown every year, getting larger each time. They are usually shed at the end of autumn or beginning of winter, after the autumn rut (breeding season). They will begin to grow again, covered in a layer of skin called velvet, in the spring, and will be fully grown in time for the next rut. The only exception to this is the female caribou - this is the only species in which females as well as males have antlers, though hers are smaller. She retains them throughout the winter and sheds them after calving in spring. It%26#039;s thought they enable her to gain access to the best feed throughout winter, when she must compete with the larger male to get enough food for herself and her unborn offspring.
Reply:Moose will drop their antlers as late as February.

Prime bulls drop their antlers from late November through February.
Reply:During cold weather.
Reply:They usually get them in the spring and they drop off in the winter.
