Rhinos need their horns for survival?

I heard that if a rhino get its horn cut (ex: by poachers), they could die? Why and is it true?

Rhinos need their horns for survival?
Poachers usually kill the rhino to get the horn. They don't have the time, money or expertise to tranquillize the rhino and safely cut the horn off.

Interesting facts about rhino horns found at

http://helios.bto.ed.ac.uk/resman/nrm/Pr...

* Do the rhinos need the horn in the wild to protect themselves and their young against predators? The horns grow back relatively quickly, about every 2 years. This means the removal of the horns needs to be kept on top of.

* The poachers may not discriminate and may just shoot any rhino.

* Only two thirds of the horn can be removed without seriously damaging the rhino, therefore the poachers may well kill the rhino for the thrird still embeded in the head.

* The poachers in thick bush may not realise the rhino has no horn.

* A poacher who has tracked a rhino for several days, to find out it has no horn will probably not leave it, killing it to prevent tracking it again wasting time.

* A conspiracy theory exists which indicates the poachers will even be paid to kill the de-horned rhino's in order to keep the price of stocks of horns high.

* The stock pile of rhino horns may bring money into the local governments if international trade in rhino horns is resumed.

* De-horning safaris may also provide a good source of income.
Reply:No. The poachers will KILL the rhino to get the horn, because you can't just walk up to a rhino and saw its horn off without having the rhino do something to stop you. Game wardens have been intentionally tranquilizing rhinos to remove their horns so the poachers will having nothing to kill it for.
Reply:Yes, they need them to defend themselves and rooting for foood.
Reply:well i seen on mostly nature shows that show rhinos before letting them go they get their horns cut off so that their are worthless to pochers i would think they would not do that if it was dangerous for the rhinos
