Should I switch from french horn to another instrument?

I am in a Junior High Symphonic Band (almost in hs) and I play the french horn but my band director always chooses pieces where french horns have unimportant parts, and if we have an exciting part she will most likely tell us not to play there. So I have been thinking of switching to an alto sax or a trombone, can anyone give me some advice???

Should I switch from french horn to another instrument?
As a band teacher I beg you not to switch!

Have you taled to your teacher about how you feel? Your teacher may not realize your frustration. Your teacher may be willing to pick a specific piece that features the afrench ahorns.

Have you tried getting a book that has French Horn solos? I like the "Favorites series" Broadway Favorites, Movie Favorites, Film Favorites, Patriotic Favorites, and Christmas Favorites. These books let you play the melody which may be more appealing to you.

Do you have a private teacher? The partials of the French Horn are very close together, and are hard to get used to. If you can't get a teacher then make sure you buy a chromatic tuner. This way you can work on making sure you are playing the pitches you mean to be playing.

If you work hard at the French Horn will find you will be a valuable comodity. Colleges have scholarships for FH players willing to play in their music departments. Also if you really want to be featured a bit more look into playing FH with a local youth orchestra. I play trombone, but honestly so does everyone else in the world. Don't give up your chance to be unique.
Reply:Is she doing that because she hates horns, or because you guys do not sound good on them yet? French horn is a good instrument, you may want to stick it out till you get a new band director in high school. If you do switch, switch big, and go to the sax. Learning another style (brass -%26gt; reed) is cool. Or pick up a violin, and skip the band altogether.
Reply:Horn players take a lot of time to develop...flutes and clarinets just wiggle their fingers! It is not the directors fault, almost all Jr. High music is written with easy horn parts because the horn players can't nail the notes as quickly as the woodwinds yet, the instrument is just too hard. Change to Sax? Arrrrggggg! Have you ever really compared the sound of a sax to a horn? Yech!
Reply:NOO! I absolutely love horn.(: Especially since there aren't as many horns as other instruments, you should stick with it. Just get really good, and practice a lot. It always gets more fun as you get better. Plus, if you plan on pursuing a music major, horn is a good scholarship instrument.(:
