It is one of the differences between horns and antlers. Horns are generally unbranched, permanent, and exist on both male and female animals. Antlers are usually branched, fall off every year and regrow the next year, and usually only the males have them (the exception is caribou/reindeer where both males and females have antlers or the rare antlered doe).





Cows belong to a group of animals known as bovids (horns are a common characteristic). Both males and females grow horns, but there is a recessive gene that can create a natural %26quot;hornless%26quot; cow that has been bred into some breeds like Swedish Hornless Cattle. Most hornless cows you see have been pollarded.
Reply:It is correct that MOST cows (male %26amp; female) have horns. Some may be naturally %26quot;polled%26quot; (horn free) when born, but most have their horns removed when they are calves, to make them easier to handle. Go out west and check out the long-horns. Those are great!
Reply:All cows have horns, males horns are just much larger.
Reply:The people who said they were bulls are merely showing their ignorance. Cows and bulls both have horns unless they are from a hornless breed.
