Name a small brown bird with horns?

I had a brown bird about 5%26quot; long in my yard. The back was a solid medium brown, the breast was a slightly lighter greenish-brown or khaki color. Each wing had one white stripe. It had two little feather horns on top of it%26#039;s head. No black or other colors visible. I walked to within about 10%26#039; of the branch it was sitting on before it flew. Can%26#039;t find it in any bird book or on the internet.

=sounds to me like the poor owl was sick and that is why you were able to get so close to it and because it sensed you were a good human. You know what they say about wise old owl%26#039;s. I think he was sending you good luck so be prepared for things looking up in your life!
Reply:woodpecker
Reply:Horned lark? Hard to know from your description. Try looking it up at http://www.enature.com
Reply:hornbill???
Reply:I%26#039;m with Runestar, sounds like is was an owl. Was the beak straight or hooked ? The eyes looking forward or one on each side ? Was it at dusk ? Early Morning ? Screech owl fits your description.
Reply:What part of the country do you live in? Could be the western screech owl.

Reply:Try horned owl. It%26#039;s prabobly some type of owl. Might have been a fledging great horned owl. But they%26#039;re not the only types with tufts.

Edit if you saw it from the back it might have been a screetch owl
